A message from the reading club
Dear reading club members, Next week we are meeting a children's author online. Several of you remember reading her stories in primary school, but the event will not be a test of who remembers the most details. We want to discuss how a writer creates characters and chooses which information to leave for readers to discover. Please remember to send one question by Thursday afternoon. A useful question refers to an idea or choice in a story; 'Why is this the best book ever?' is less helpful because it assumes an opinion that the author may not share. You may disagree with a character's decision and still ask respectfully about it. Last year, two groups forgot to attach their question files. Their messages arrived on time, but the questions did not. This time, check that your attachment opens before you send it. If you prefer, put the question directly in the message instead. After the meeting, you will write a short reflection. Separate what you remember hearing from what you think the speaker meant. It is acceptable to say that you are unsure about a detail and ask someone to check the recording. A confident memory is not a perfect recording of an event. Finally, remember to tell the organiser if you cannot attend. That helps us offer the available place to another reader. The reading club team
