Six plants and a confident headline

We put six small plants on the classroom windowsill for a project. Three received one measured amount of water, and three received a different amount. After two weeks, the second group was taller. Our first poster title was "More water makes plants grow faster."

Before printing it, we checked our notes. The plants had not all started at the same height. The taller group was also closer to the brightest part of the window. One pot had been moved during cleaning, but nobody had recorded the new position.

"The difference must be caused by water," said one teammate. Another replied, "It might be, but we have changed more than one thing." That sentence transformed our discussion. We had observed a difference; we had not isolated its cause.

We changed the poster. It now described what we had done, showed the measurements and listed the factors we had not controlled. Our conclusion was that this small classroom comparison could suggest a question for another experiment, not settle a general rule for every plant.

For a future attempt, we proposed starting with more comparable plants, recording positions and changing one main factor at a time. We would also need enough observations to judge how much results varied. The second poster sounded less dramatic, but it was more informative.

The project did teach us something important. An honest account of uncertainty is not an admission that the work was pointless. It helps the next person understand what the evidence can and cannot support.
