The lunch box in the glass case
When I visited our local museum, I expected to see expensive objects. Instead, my favourite exhibit was an ordinary metal lunch box. Its handle was bent, and one corner had a small repair. I wondered why it had been placed in a glass case.
The label explained that the box was used by a railway worker many years ago. It was donated to the museum by his family. A photograph showed the worker with two colleagues, but the exact date of the photograph was unknown. The museum did not invent a date to make the label look complete.
Beside the box, a page from the worker's diary was displayed. He wrote about sharing lunch during a long shift. This gave the object a human story. The repair on the corner was made later, but nobody knew exactly who repaired it. The guide explained that a museum can show a question as well as an answer.
After the visit, I looked differently at the things in our kitchen. An ordinary object does not need to belong to a famous person to help us understand daily life. Its story becomes stronger when we separate evidence from guesses.
