Our class wanted a shared project room after lessons. The teacher agreed, but asked us to propose clear rules. Our first list contained twelve instructions, and almost every sentence began with 'You must'. We read it again and asked which rules were really necessary. Keeping the entrance clear was important because everyone needed a safe way out. Returning borrowed tools was also an obligation. However, using blue paper instead of green paper was simply one person's preference.
We rewrote the list in three parts: things we had to do, things we must not do and choices we could make ourselves. We added advice about leaving enough time to tidy up. Nobody had to stay for the whole afternoon, but each person needed to tell the teacher before leaving. At the next meeting, we checked whether the rules were understandable. Several pupils suggested shorter wording. The final agreement was useful because it explained both our responsibilities and our freedom to choose.
