День в процессе: история
At half past three yesterday, our school hall was full of quiet activity. One group was arranging photographs on a display board. Another group was testing a word game at a table near the window. I was writing short captions while my partner was checking the spelling of place names. Our teacher was walking between the groups and answering questions.
A photograph from that moment shows only part of the afternoon. In it, one pupil is standing beside an empty table. That does not mean she did nothing all day. A few minutes earlier, she carried the boxes into the hall. At the moment of the photograph, she was waiting for the next instruction.
When we described the afternoon later, we separated the background from the completed actions. 'At half past three, we were preparing the exhibition' described the process. 'We opened the doors at four' told readers about a completed event that followed it.
