At the start of the term, Dima could understand short written directions, but he found spoken explanations difficult. He often knew the words and still lost the sequence of actions. His first goal was simply 'be better at English'. His partner suggested a more specific goal: follow three spoken directions without reading a full transcript.
Dima began with short recordings. He listened once for the general task and again for the order of steps. Then he compared his notes with the transcript. After two weeks, he was able to follow a new three-step task correctly. He did not suddenly understand every speaker or every topic. However, he could point to a real improvement and explain the method that helped him.
For the next month, he chose a slightly longer explanation. He hopes he will be able to follow four steps and ask a useful question when something is unclear. His plan includes practice, feedback and time to rest.
