Our media club prepared an exhibition called Look Again. Each pair chose a picture from our own school project and wrote two captions. The first caption described only visible details. The second included a possible explanation, clearly marked as a guess. My partner and I chose a photograph of a pupil beside a table. There was a painted box in the foreground and a folded sheet of paper near the window. The pupil was holding a ruler, but the photograph did not show what happened before or after that moment.
Our first caption said, 'A pupil is holding a ruler beside a painted box.' Our second began, 'Perhaps the pupil is checking the size of the box.' We did not write that the pupil was worried or that the project had failed. Those claims needed information we did not have. Before displaying the photograph, our teacher checked the necessary permission. During the exhibition, visitors compared the captions and discussed the difference between observation and assumption. Some visitors changed their first ideas after looking more carefully. The activity showed us that a detailed description can be useful without pretending to know everything.
