A stronger application with fewer claims

A youth museum invited applications for volunteers who would help visitors during a weekend exhibition. Seventeen-year-old Anya wanted to apply, but she felt that her experience looked too ordinary. Her first draft described her as an expert communicator and a project manager, although she had only helped with one school display.

When she reread the advertisement, she noticed that the organisers were not asking for impressive titles. They wanted volunteers who could explain simple directions, listen carefully, arrive reliably and ask for help when they did not know an answer. Anya realised that her real experience might be relevant if she described it precisely.

She replaced project manager with a short account of her contribution. She had checked labels, prepared a visitor map and explained the display to two small groups. She did not claim to have designed every part of the exhibition. She also described a difficulty: when a visitor asked an unfamiliar question, she had found the person responsible rather than invented an answer.

For her small portfolio, Anya selected a diagram she had created herself. She removed unnecessary personal information and checked that she had permission to share any work involving others. She did not attach class lists or screenshots of private discussions. If a reference were needed, she would ask the person before giving their contact details.

Her revised application contained fewer grand claims but more useful evidence. It allowed the organiser to see what she had done, what she was willing to learn and which support she might need. Anya understood that honest self-presentation was not the same as making herself sound unimportant. Specific examples could communicate value more clearly than a collection of titles that she could not explain.
